WORKS OF MERCY - PROVIDE - FOR MINISTERS
“At the sight of the crowds, His heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for His harvest.’” (Matthew 9:36-38)
The number of youth who experience literal homelessness in the United States is staggering and should not be ignored. The number of homeless young hearts? Even more.
Young adulthood is a significant time for figuring out who you are and where you belong. Many young adults struggle with discernment when it comes to work, study, relationships, and vocations. Some enter into a season of rebellion that leads them away from their family values and away from the Church. Religion is often cast aside in exchange for identifying as an atheist, agnostic, or, more often, a “none”. Or a young person may still openly identify as a Catholic, while not feeling truly at home in the Church. Instead they may feel indifferent, uncommitted, or simply unseen. They may even have experiences that directly make them feel unwelcome.
Young adulthood can also be a season where hearts feel separated from authentic relationships in general. Perhaps the most prevalent suffering affecting young people today is that of loneliness. This loneliness is being noticed at alarming levels despite, or perhaps even because of, the prevalence of social media in our world. Pope Leo XIV spoke on this reality recently in his meeting with the International Youth Advisory Body (IYAB) in Rome: “All too often, social media algorithms merely create a sounding board for individuals…Yet, everyone remains alone with themselves, prisoners of their own inclinations and projections.” The pope is not alone in his observations. Psychologists and other experts all acknowledge that the human heart has a need for genuine, face-to-face community that cannot be substituted by technology.
With you. To Christ. Through the heart of the Church. That is our mission at Tecum Ministries. We believe strongly in God’s call for laborers to go out and bring home His lost sheep. Our goal is to accompany parishes as they create a welcoming environment for young adults who might otherwise be hesitant or even afraid about coming to Church. In turn, parishes and their young adult ministries can then accompany these young adults in their journey of life and faith.
How? Through fellowship and formation events that not only instruct, but also inspire young hearts. Through leaders who authentically love and listen to young people. And by creating opportunities for young people to make true friends and personally encounter Jesus Christ.
