WORKS OF MERCY - RESTORE - FOr Ministers

It is reassuring to know that the Church has a number of different ministries around the world that are specifically dedicated to serving our brothers and sisters who are incarcerated. But it is also important to remember that not all prisoners reside behind bars. Our parishes and young adult ministries are called to also serve those who are suffering from less obvious forms of imprisonment.

Young people today struggle with all types of chains. Perhaps it is an exterior one, such as a handicap or specific life circumstance that prevents them from fully participating in the community and life of the Church. Or, perhaps more often, their struggle is interior. They feel trapped by a particular sin or addiction, or they struggle with shame, fear, loneliness, resentment, or depression. These struggles can prevent them from walking through a church door. Or they may be physically present in the room, while their heart is guarded.

Our parishes and young adult ministries are called to be people and places of hope and freedom for such hearts. Here are some questions for reflection when it comes to practicing this week’s works of mercy:

  • Is your parish or young adult ministry making the effort to go out to those on the fringes, rather than waiting for young adults to come to you?

  • Does your parish or ministry have resources and accommodations for young people who have disabilities, lack of funds or transportation, schedule conflicts, or other impediments?

  • Does your parish or ministry have an online presence to try to reach young people, while also working towards the ultimate goal of inviting them into in-person community?

  • Is your parish or ministry a place where those who are struggling will feel welcomed, rather than judged? Are you helping  to build a community that recognizes the dignity of every person and one that does not expect everyone to fit a perfect mold in order to belong?

  • Does your parish or ministry not only preach but also practice mercy and forgiveness?

  • Does your parish or ministry offer regular access to the sacrament of Reconciliation and strive to help share the beauty and importance of this sacrament with young people?

  • Is your parish or ministry helping to act as a bridge between young people and the additional support they may need to break free from whatever is imprisoning their mind and heart? (For example, having ready referrals for professional counseling, etc.)
