WORKS OF MERCY - WEEK 1

“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” (Matthew 5:7)

You may be familiar with this beatitude from Scripture. But did you know that our faith teaches that the reverse statement can also be true?

We could say: “Blessed are those who have been shown mercy, they are called to be merciful.” Or, “Blessed are those who have received God’s mercy, they are called to share His mercy with others.” The gospel of Luke puts it this way: Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36).

As humans, we are all sinners who struggle with the trials and sufferings of living in this world. God asks us to rely on His mercy to help us heal and persevere. He also invites us to take an active role in helping to bring His mercy to the world.

This summer, we will be exploring some tangible ways to receive and share God’s mercy through the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. We invite you to join us in person with @tecummelbourne for fellowship and formation, and to also follow along with reflections on our social media pages and website. We can’t wait to dive deeper into the mystery of God’s mercy with you!

Reflection questions:

Where are you in need of God’s mercy in your life? How have you experienced God’s mercy already? When have you found yourself the receiver of compassion and mercy from others?
